The Yukon Government is set to engage the Kwanlin Dun, Carcross Tagish First Nations and the Ta’an Kwach’in Council to explore land development south of Whitehorse.
The area in Mount Lorne is known as McGowan lands, which has expressed interest for agricultural and rural residential development.
The government says it wants to explore the potential for private development. The parcel of land is public, but within First Nations traditional territory.
Energy Mines and Resources Minister Scott Kent says this is an opportunity to increase lots in rural Yukon.
The terms of reference for the project is being considered, but would see the developer get the necessary permits and complete required environmental assessments.
However if this is not achieved, the developer could sell the land back to the government without penalty.
